A crazy ride of a book that includes incest, racism hypochondria and misogyny among a family of mostly unlikeable characters. The first chapter, told from the point of view of Benjy who is intellectually disabled and does a lot of crying, jumps around in time and I started to think there were mistakes in my ebook version. Definitely a challenging read. More of a portrait than a story--a portrait that you must assemble from bits of color as you go along. It helped me to read summaries of the characters and events, otherwise it was very disorienting. For example, there were two characters with the same name in different parts of the story, and it was initially very confusing.
