I think everything clicks for James here. Yeah, it's long, but there are passages of breathtaking beauty. Probably my favorite novel by him (and I'm not huge fan).

A dark story, beautifully told. Every time I reread this book, it seems deeper and richer than I remembered.
Important for helping to move novels into the world of modernism and for some REALLY incredible writing. Unfortunately that writing is just TOO incredible. It is unbelievably dense and slow, like nothing you've seen before. It makes Faulkner look like Stephen King.

I spent a whole Sunday, in bed, reading half of this book. It clocks in about 600+ pages, but the last 100pages really draw you in and make it near impossible for you to even get up to eat a meal. It is a surprise to me to like a book which was written 125 years ago, yet does not seem so far away.
This is probably James' most popular novel. It touches on all his favorite themes - old world/Europe vs. new world/America, tradition vs. progress, rich vs. poor. I will always happily enter into James' world.

I much prefer Henry's brother William. This book should not be considered classic literature.
