The Penderwicks at Last by Jeanne Birdsall
"I had such high hopes for this book! I’ve been waiting for a worthy finale to this series since I read ‘The Penderwicks in Spring’ shortly after it was published and it proved to be one of the only books that’s ever made me tear up.

So, we've got frolicking in meadows and waiting for people to arrive and waiting for the ending. Nothing really happens in this book. Scenes aren't fleshed out; they're almost summarized. We don't get to know any of the characters that well. All the ...more

“Everywhere I go I'm asked if I think the university stifles writers. My opinion is that they don't stifle enough of them. There's many a best-seller that could have been prevented by a good teacher.”

“A story is a way to say something that can’t be said any other way, and it takes every word in the story to say what the meaning is.”

“Art never responds to the wish to make it democratic; it is not for everybody; it is only for those who are willing to undergo the effort needed to understand it.”
Flannery O'Connor, Mystery and Manners: Occasional Prose

Ira Glass
“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”
Ira Glass

T.S. Eliot
“For last year's words belong to last year's language
And next year's words await another voice.”
T.S. Eliot, Four Quartets
