Buddenbrooks: the Decline of a Family. In beautiful language, this book lives up to its title.

Not a masterpiece in the same way that The Magic Mountain is, but a very fine work of realism: strong characterization, interesting and often funny dialogue, the sweep of family life. Four generations occupy the novel, but the central character is Thomas, a sympathetic character with whom, finally, the reader is almost unable to sympathize.
