Just a highly entertaining tale--one that people of many ages and backgrounds find satisfying. I especially like the McGyver-style ingenuity evidenced by the hero and his mentor.
The vengeance theme took my thoughts back to Tolstoy's epigraph to Anna Karenina: "Vengeance is mine, I will repay [saith the Lord]." A few months ago, someone asked me the question, "What book would you bring if you were stranded on a desert island?" Embarassingly, my first inclination was to cheat. I'd bring The Lord of the Rings and of course, throw in The Hobbit, since it is a prequel. Or, the Harry Potter series - all 7 books. But, if I was limited to just one title, I think I've found my answer - The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, and I would definitely bring the Blackstone audiobook version, narrated by John

I finally finished this book which I started and put down three times. I listened to the John Lee audio. I'm not sure who the translator was but I recommend the version.
I'm giving the book five stars because it is definitely a masterpiece - but what a slog! I almost want to read it again because there is so much intricacy and intrigue that I know I missed some important points. But definitely not now!
