Update - December 17: I'm changing my rating to 1 star because the more I think about the story, the less I like it. Not even all the diversity and the writing style could save this book for me.

Everything, Everything is a cute and cheesy read. There's insta-love. You know, girl sees boy and her whole vision of the world changes, boy had never meet a girl like her... been there, read that. I'll be honest. I don't like insta-love but that wasn't my main problem because at least the relationship of Update - December 17: I'm changing my rating to 1 star because the more I think about the story, the less I like it. Not even all the diversity and the writing style could save this book for me.

Everything, Everything is a cute and cheesy read. There's insta-love. You know, girl sees boy and her whole vision of the world changes, boy had never meet a girl like her... been there, read that. I'll be honest. I don't like insta-love but that wasn't my main problem because at least the relationship of Mady and Olly develops throughout the book. Anyway, I had huge issues with the plot.

For one thing, I felt like the SCID was not taken seriously. I think the message the author tried to give was that 'an illness doesn't define who you are' but she failed in doing so. (view spoiler)

For another thing, Maddie is so selfish. Example 1: She has not left her house for seventeen years because she suffers from a rare disease. She's allergic to the world so her mom has done everything in her power to keep her safe. (view spoiler) Example 2: (view spoiler)

Nevertheless, I might give Nicola Yoon's upcoming books another chance because I liked the the writing style and the graphic details she included. ...more

I've no words to express how much I loved this book I read it in one sitting and it was so freaking amazing
I heard a lot of really good things about this book but I didn't expect to love it as much as I did

This story is so touching so beautiful so beautifully written the characters feel so real the romance is just perfect
Madeline is the kind of character who hid such a strong personality her desire to live is so inspiring she is willing to lose everything so she can experiment simple things

Awe, I was expecting so much more from this. The raving reviews, the pretty cover (we were all thinking it)... Im not saying this was bad. In fact, it was very enjoyable! The writing style was great, and I loved the emails and IMs and diagrams that were included. It made for a really fast read, which was perfect for a summer-y romance.

I REALLY REALLY loved this book... It was just BEAUTIFUL. I loved the story and more than that I loved the details.
I loved how Nicola made every word mean soo much just one word EVERYTHING explained EVERYTHING....

I loved this book a lot. It was pretty close to perfect. There was a huge family aspect in this book since the main character's mom was pretty much her only friend since she's spent her whole life trapped within her house. And of course, this book had an amazing love story.

This book was a quick and easy read and I really enjoyed how the chapters were short and spread out and I enjoyed the added drawings, emails, flight tickets etc. However I did have some problems with it.
First of all, it think it was totally unrealistic of how they met, like if I was to catch someone staring at me from their window I'd think they were a complete creep. However the concept was kinda nice.

I was really expecting to enjoy this book a lot more than I did, especially since I went backwards and read Nicola Yoon's most recent book (The Sun is Also A Star) before I finally managed to find the time to read this one. With the movie coming out soon I really wanted to read it and formulate my own images of the book beforehand, because any good book nerd knows that the book is always better than the movie, amiright?

But this book fell way short of my expectations. Maybe it's because, again, I was really expecting to enjoy this book a lot more than I did, especially since I went backwards and read Nicola Yoon's most recent book (The Sun is Also A Star) before I finally managed to find the time to read this one. With the movie coming out soon I really wanted to read it and formulate my own images of the book beforehand, because any good book nerd knows that the book is always better than the movie, amiright?

But this book fell way short of my expectations. Maybe it's because, again, I really enjoyed The Sun is Also a Star so I had high expectations for this book as well. This starts out with enough promise - the narrator, Maddy, is of mixed descent (African American and Asian, which by the way I love how Yoon does that in all of her stories), and she's battling a rare disease that's kept her confined to only her home for literally her entire life. So when a boy Maddy's age moves next door, she almost instantly falls in love with him and begins to realize that there is a difference between being happy and content (i.e., settling) versus feeling fulfilled with the life you live.

However, it quickly fell apart for me only a few chapters into the story. I felt that everything about it was underdeveloped and almost lazy writing even though The Sun Is Also A Star is so thorough and compelling. For one thing, I felt like the characters in this story are fairly flat. Aside from Maddy's hunger for the outside world once she meets Olly, I don't feel that I know the characters as real, complex characters who could exist outside the book. Which is fine, fiction isn't always completely realistic. But I felt as though every character was fairly flat, and complex, well nuanced characters are a necessity in good literature. There's a few qualities stressed in each character, but past one or two strong character traits no one is entirely developed. Even Olly, this adorable love interest who sweeps Maddy off her feet, felt flat to me aside from having an intense interest in math and parkour.

The other underdeveloped aspects of the novel are Maddy's sickness. I understand that she isn't supposed to leave her house because she could get sick, but it felt like the author could have really explained a little more about this disease since the book almost literally is centered around it. I did feel the aspects of domestic abuse were also a bit underdeveloped and lightly treated. I'm emphasizing the themes and treatment of sickness and abuse because they're both topics that are too huge to simply glaze over. Maybe I'm just knocking this book too hard now and someone will criticize me for it later, but I feel like I've read books that handled both topics much better.

As for the romance angle, it felt a bit rushed, but I guess it's fair because Maddy doesn't know how romance "works" and she's literally never been exposed to other people her own age, nevertheless another potential romantic interest. So even though it seems too instant I can justify it for that reason. The only criticism I have for the romantic aspect is that I wasn't as compelled or drawn to Olly and Maddy's romance as I've been with other romances in literature, and I'm not sure why. Again, I just feel like as though I've read books with romantic storylines that I've enjoyed so much more.

And it breaks my heart to say this, but I agree with the reviewers who stated that the twist ending felt cheap and rushed. And even though it makes for a nice and tidy ending, I don't think it was too believable and it was definitely under explained after the fact.

I can't say that I would ever read this again, but it did read quickly. And I will say that I normally really enjoy young adult literature, so the fact that this book underwhelmed me really surprised me.
