The book starts off a little confusing with the different points of view, but by around twenty pages in you get used to it. Each character begins by being a bit mysterious, but it doesn’t take long for you to get involved in the story. When each character’s backstory is revealed, you begin to understand them and their motives so well that they grow on you over time. I have known forever about the Titanic. I knew nothing about the Gustloff, and this fast-paced, powerful book by Ruta Sepetys was incredibly eye-opening. It depicts not only the horrors of what we humans can do to each other, but also demonstrates the incredible power of selflessness and humanity, which can bring about miracles in even the darkest of places. A must-read.
