This book was amazing. I’m both relieved and devastated that it’s over. It’s a little slow for the first half of the book but I think that is due to getting the whole story laid out, like only historical fiction can do.
This book will have you delving into the history of the brave French women of WWII. The smuggling of airmen, the hiding of children, the pull to reunite families, or what is left of families.

This was my first Kristin Hannah and completely different than I expected. I do love books set in WWII especially from the perspective of living in a country other than the UK. This followed the lives of 2 sisters living in France and their stories as war rages through the country. Utterly heartbreaking in places, I had to put it down at least twice when reading in public. So compelling though - the scenes where Isabelle is trekking through the mountains had me holding my breath. Utterly lovely,

This damn book.
Can this be a classic? One of those books we all need to read before we die?
Some of the other books I've rated as 5 star, need stars knocked off after reading this one. Or maybe this one just needs more than 5.
This is an amazing story of love, survival, sacrifice and endurance. Vianne and Isabelle, sisters, who are caught in the middle of WWII, fighting in their own heroic ways to try and hold together some kind of life for the ones they love and themselves.
