A fast read! The narrative is a bit slow with all the tangents about Strike's life, but the mystery is compelling and engaging. I really enjoyed the dialogue and how everything slowly came together about Lula's death. The final twist is a tiny bit predictable; you get an inkling of it pretty early in the novel, so when it finally happens, it's not really a surprise. Still good, though! I also really liked Robin as a character and I'm curious to see how the series is going to progress.

Trust Rowling to come up with something like this to keep you hooked.
This is actually my second review. The first refused to get saved and there's no way in hell, I'm typing it all over again. So this is going to be extremely short for two reasons.
1. I already wrote one (boo hoo you couldn't read it)
2. Finding Dory starts in an hour and I'm late.
I like characters that I feel I can connect to. Cormoran Strike is one. Although he's huge, which I'm not. He's a boxer, again not me. Walks with a lim ...more

This was an okay mystery. It was a little tedious and a little boring and never really had an “ah ha!” moment. The characters were individually interesting and the ultimate culmination of clues was interesting, but as a reader I didn’t connect with them, which is probably the greatest flaw.
The book is basically entirely composed of the PI interviewing people interspersed with his overblown reaction to his just-ended, very puzzling and ultimately pointless toxic relationship....and to pull that ...more

Exceptional
Excellent mystery. Far exceeded expectations. Rowling has gotten her craft polished to near perfection. I really liked this book…not just the mystery, which is as good as any Block or Collins mystery (and those two are all-time), but the likability of the characters. Harry Potter isn’t my cuppa tea, but Cameron Strick, er, Cormoran Strike (and Robin) is right up my alley. Bravo.
