holy crap. oh my gosh. oh my gosh. i am so grateful i did the tandem read, it was worth every absolute second and chapter. the way that this book filled so many gaps and kept me on my toes!!! i cannot even begin how much i loved the character builds and story building in this book especially in a place we haven’t explored yet. i was told by others this would not be the best book and there was a huge focus on Chaol throughout. this book filled me with shock, tears, excitement, and a decent amount ...more

The only reason I gave 4 stars is for the ending. Without Aelin, this book is just a branch story and not a sequel. The story is needed for the knowledge gained in the last few chapters and the support of a kingdom. Gosh....does it need to be such a lengthy novel? I just dragged myself to finish it. I am glad I did, could have totally skipped some 50% of the book in the middle and still not miss it.

I admit I was skeptical that a book solely about Chaol and Nesryn would hold my interest. It isn't that I dislike them, nay. It's just that after the ending in Empire of Storms I was kind of itching for an immediate continuation. To be honest, I really think that the series would have been better if Chaol and Nesryn's stories were told alongside the rest of the characters' stories. But I know that inspiration can strike at odd times and sometimes later in the writing process. For this reason, I I admit I was skeptical that a book solely about Chaol and Nesryn would hold my interest. It isn't that I dislike them, nay. It's just that after the ending in Empire of Storms I was kind of itching for an immediate continuation. To be honest, I really think that the series would have been better if Chaol and Nesryn's stories were told alongside the rest of the characters' stories. But I know that inspiration can strike at odd times and sometimes later in the writing process. For this reason, I can see why the series ended up this way. I was actually surprised that Maas was able to capture my attention so intensely with this book. I suppose perhaps not surprised but glad. Maas has always been able to capture my attention and hold it. With the change in main characters though I was just a bit apprehensive. In the end, I loved this book in its own way.

I really loved how deep Maas dives into Chaol's character. I know that there are a lot of Chaol haters out there but I have never been one of them. I always liked Chaol even when he wasn't his best self. I think that those times made him more human, and more real. Everybody struggles at one point or another and I think that Chaol gets a bad rap for all the wrong reasons. I already had a soft spot for Chaol but Maas did an excellent job writing the rest of the main characters in this book. She really made them come alive and made me care about them just as much as I care about the other characters in this series. Each character is genuine and unique.

I felt that Nesryn and Sartaq didn't get as much page time as Chaol and Yrene. I would have liked to see more of them together and more of their romance progressing. Don't get me wrong, I did love the moments that they had in the story. I guess I just wanted more.

I loved the plot of the story and how it tied into the overall plot of the series. Maas did an excellent job of connecting everything. I am always really impressed with Maas's unique touches when it comes to the premises and plots of her stories.

The romances in the story were lovely. I enjoyed Chaol and Yrene's journey to find love with one another. They started out as more of an enemies-to-lovers pair so it was nice to see them come together like they did and fall in love. I admit I was overjoyed that Chaol finally got his HEA. Nesryn and Sartaq were adorable together. They really got each other on a deep level. I liked how they were so alike in their personalities. They really meshed well and they had obvious chemistry with one another. And Sartaq's news from his father at the end of the story put a smile on my face. I keep wondering how Nesryn will deal with all of it when the time comes.

Overall, this was an outstanding addition to this series. I can't give it enough praise. I know a lot of people were on the fence about reading this one but it is so worth it in the end. Expanding on Chaol and Nesryn's characters was a joy and seeing the events unfold that are tied to the overall series plot was great. You definitely need to read this one if you haven't yet.
