Where Austen leaves off, Gaskell picks up.
There is a great similarity in the style of these two 19th century writers. Both wield language with elegance and strength. Call it muscle-bound eloquence!

I just don't have the patience to read classics (and weird English accents) anymore haha. Interesting story though. Very wordy in descriptions. We got it, Margaret was super hot. Meh, I would prefer watch its BBC's adaptation.

The four-part BBC adaptation is one of my favorite things ever, so I figured it was high time I read the book it was birthed from. Though I prefer the film's emotional nuance to Gaskell's often melodramatic prose, I recognize how unusual this novel must have been for the time it was written - and her ability to weave so much challenging subject matter into one coherent narrative is fairly astonishing.
