I am a trekkie, not a trekker. Given that, another reader may call this a three instead of a five star book.
I grew up with the francise, the idea, and the names of the priducrion crew, the actors and the idea(l)s of Star Trek, which in a conservative bedroom community was an anathma. At almost 60, milestones like the Golden Anniversary of a low budget serial sci-fi show are amazing. And this ( what will become) 2-volume pop culture "bible" of first person source material is highly entertaining and very readable in a style favored by television documentaries these days. Information is quoted, with timelines to back it up.
As a student of history, popular culture and theology I love that it feels finished, that those stories and gossip about what was going on and how the response was shaped. William Shatner is quoted as saying "the best science fiction stories have their genesis in real life". If they didn't, a lot of what is published these days would never have been in the first place.
I am so looking forward to the second volume edited by JJ Abrams. I highly recommend this book
