What Members Thought
I am a heretic.
I’ve seen breathless praise for this book for years and years, but I thought it was just ok. I wasn’t in love with either of the two main characters and the southern gothic feel of the book just reminded me that I wasn’t reading Flannery O’Connor.

Something horrible happened in the Blackwood house, and now the village children chant terrible rhymes at the youngest surviving Blackwood. The inhabitants of the house are all a little unhinged, but this unique book is entertaining and a great Halloween read. The ending paragraph is just the creepiest.
I love it.
It got a bit scary for a while, but all is well that ends well :-D
I was horrified by all the trashed things but in the end... it's just things.
I agree with Constance. Cousin Charlie should have done that before he even entered the house. Nasty bastard. ...more

I kind of get what everyone loves about this book, but it really just wasn’t my cup of tea. I couldn’t have cared less about the characters, I didn’t enjoy spending time in Merricat’s head, and I saw the twist coming about a mile off. The last couple chapters had a bit of interesting social commentary (bc this is Shirley Jackson, after all). But not enough to redeem the rest of the book, which I just found too tedious.
