Sisters Merrikat and Constance Blackwood live in a big old house with their sickly uncle Julian. There, they avoid all the other townspeople, who hate them. Turns out, they may have been involved in the sudden deaths of the rest of their family.
This novel is by turns creepy, sad and hilarious. Merrikat is one of the oddest and most interesting characters I've read in quite some time. Highest recommendation for fans of dark comedies. ...more

Shirley Jackson paints a haunting psychological portrait of the Blackwood family - or at least the remains of the Blackwood family. Mary Katherine (Merricat) and her sister Constance are the caretakers of a large estate and their invalid Uncle Julian. Ridiculed and shunned by the local villagers, the young ladies lead an eccentric life. I kind of get what everyone loves about this book, but it really just wasn’t my cup of tea. I couldn’t have cared less about the characters, I didn’t enjoy spending time in Merricat’s head, and I saw the twist coming about a mile off. The last couple chapters had a bit of interesting social commentary (bc this is Shirley Jackson, after all). But not enough to redeem the rest of the book, which I just found too tedious.
