Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day)
In 1946, as London emerges from a war-torn history, Juliet, who wrote humorous articles during the war, is now looking for a new subject to write about for a new book. Unfortunately, an idea is nowhere near to be found. Out of the blue, she gets a letter from a Guernsey resident, thus beginning a long and warm association with him and other residents of Guernsey. I began this lovely heartfelt book last night and I had to make myself stop and put it down or I was going to be up all night to keep reading this wonderful novel. The letters are fascinating and each writer has their own voice. What a lovely wonderful group of people to meet - and now i wish to travel and see the lovely island for myself. This book - touched me - with its simple clear storytelling of human love and courage. It does not come wrapped in fancy sentences and complex deeds and hidde ...more

A sweet story about a sad and terrible time in history. Loved the letters and the beauty of the words. Very disappointed in the rush and briefness of the ending. Long awaited romance dropped quickly at the end. Overall, I liked it, but a more developed ending would have caused me to rate it higher.
