I was surprised by how amazingly well written and poignant this novel was! After reading the back cover, I was preparing myself for a potentially dull read: a butler goes for a drive and contemplates his long career as well as philosophically musing over what makes one a "great" butler and trying to define "dignity". Sounds pretty boring.....only it wasn't! It was actually incredibly moving and insightful. It is interesting just how much pride was taken in one's work at that time. To be a butler

This was a very curious book. It was told from the POV of a head butler at a large English estate during the middle half of the 20th century, including WWII. The butler is quite tedious, and the beginning of the book largely consists of him ruminating on the proper ways to behave. Yet by the end of the book, you really become quite endeared to him and wish for him to find happiness in his life.
