You feel you are in the hands of an author who is a master of his craft when reading this book. On the face of it nothing happens: Mr Stevens goes for a drive. But the inner thoughts of the butler, written in the style in which he would have spoken, are the story. I loved this book and wish it had been longer than only @200 pages. The writing was splendid and I felt completely transported into the mind of the main character. I kept hearing Carson's voice from "Downton Abbey". I am actually rewatching the series now, so that could also be why!

I thought it was masterful how the events that occurred to the character are filtered through his internal sense of his identity and role in society. I very much enjoy 19th century literature that includes a lot of in

Stunning.
Story of a butler in a proper English manor, serving a politically influential Lord. All quite stuffy with etiquette and cast system of staff... then deftly Kazuo drops treasures of insight into the minds, methods and motives of characters.

I believe that I have started this book many times but have been unable to finish it; however with the help of a reading club it became a lot more of an enjoyable read now that I can more fully appreciate the unreliable narration of the book. This read is really sad and it's pretty much the destructive tale of two men following their own strict codes of living and being ultimately betrayed by them because of their failure to adapt.
