This book was long, boring, and repetitive. This is set in 1830's England, where there's a bit of magic produced by translation, but otherwise the world is unchanged. The story starts out with a somewhat interesting premise, but then nothing of note happens for the next 300-400 pages. I found this book to read like a dense, grown-up version of the longer Harry Potter books, with languages in place of wands and greedy professors in place of Voldemort. I don’t love academia books, but I respect the world-building of this one. There is a lot of set-up and only the last 40% of this book has action. I think I would have enjoyed this more if I had any experience with Oxford.

I really liked the writing in this book, and was fascinated by all the history and talk of language. The one downside is that the ending just didn't work for me. It kind of felt like it fizzled out.
