Despite the many great reviews I resisted reading this book for a long time. I was afraid that the premise; youngsters selected to fight to the death in gladiator style games, was appealing to all the worst instincts in my fellow readers. I abhor the sick fascination that draws us to be curious about the traffic accidents that we pass, the sensationalism of 'reality' shows like fear factor and survivor and the 'hope we see an accident' attitude toward stock car racing.

I asked for book recommendations from my friends, and several of them highly recommended this one. In fact, they loved it so much that I feel a little bad that I didn't. WOW! You must read this book. I flew through it and was a nervous wreck the entire time. So good, such suspense. Another series for young adults, but this first one is great. Recommended!
