At first I shied away from reading this series because everyone was reading it and raving about it. I didn't even bother to find out what it was about at first. But then I read the synopsis of The Hunger Games and was intrigued so I picked it up at Target. I read the entire book in one night and went back to Target to get Catching Fire the very next day. Having been in a reading trough for an extended period of time, it was great to be swept up in a story that I was eager to return to when I couldn't be reading it. While I wouldn't call this a five-star read (I'm very stingy with my five-star ratings), I thought this was very well written with a truly iconic main character. I know much has been made of how Katniss Everdeen compares to Bella Swan, and for me, I can only hope that girls read both series and decide that Katniss is the girl they wan Having been in a reading trough for an extended period of time, it was great to be swept up in a story that I was eager to return to when I couldn't be reading it. While I wouldn't call this a five-star read (I'm very stingy with my five-star ratings), I thought this was very well written with a truly iconic main character. I know much has been made of how Katniss Everdeen compares to Bella Swan, and for me, I can only hope that girls read both series and decide that Katniss is the girl they want to be. For as brave as she is and all the horrors she faces, she is such a teenager. She acts before she thinks; she focuses on comparatively minor slights while missing the big picture; she worries about how to deal with the boys in her life. I loved the way Suzanne Collins made Katniss so easy to relate to while she was enmeshed in the utterly unfamiliar experience of the Hunger Games. Having not read other books in the wave of stories about dystopian futures that seem to have taken over YA lit in the last few years, I have to say that the link that is always maintained between my present and Katniss's was what made the story so compelling.

I will definitely read the other two books in the series (just waiting for Catching Fire to show up in the mail). I've tried to stay away from spoilers for the other two books, so I am not sure where the story will go. (I appreciate that The Hunger Games could easily stand alone.) Unsurprisingly, I am also curious to see what happens between Katniss and Peeta and Katniss and Gale. While I hope that Katniss continues to be a strong, independent person - I love the way she's so certain about not marrying or having children - Suzanne Collins does seem to love upending her world, so I anticipate that Katniss's perspective about her future in The Hunger Games will not be the final word on it. Also, I'm an unabashed Peeta girl (are there Peeta girls and Gale girls? I've been reading about the Twilight series for too long! Ugh.) right now, so I hope Katniss's relationships with both boys continue in the series.

I don't know why, but I hated the series. The whole lot. So I won't rate it. Until I can figure out sth.... This series frustrates me! Which is very frustrating for me, coz I don't understand why I can't think about it normally. I mean, I hate the world they live in. It's just too harsh...and too much to take in, along with the real life problems. Maybe, I was so drawn into it that the ending couldn't satisfy me. This series...is a regret. Unputdownable. I put off reading this book for a while because everyone was reading it and I hate being one of those band-wagon readers. But once I finally decided to read it I was kicking myself for waiting for so long. I finished reading in the middle of the night and the next day I immediately went to the store and bought Catching Fire! I would have bought Mockingjay too but it wasn't published yet. ...more
