What Members Thought
I loved this movie as a kid. And finally getting around to the book it’s like a whole new adventure. There is really not a lot of similarity in the events of of the book and the events of the movie. The movie is better in a lot of ways, including plot structure, but the book is what started it all. It was certainly charming and enjoyable. L. Frank Baum's Oz books are just another handful in the long list of classic children's books that I have never read. While I liked the differences between the novel and the classic film version, for me it was just ok. I felt like the story was awfully slight (did Baum want to save up for the other 13 books in the series?), and I don't feel compelled to read other books in the series. I read this to my kids, and they thought it was a bit too silly. I thought it was fine. I got a kick out of the scarecrow’s “bran-new brains”.
I just couldn't get into it. Maybe it was just me.
