What Members Thought

I believe one of my first author binges was L. Frank Baum—and what a binge. I was probably 7 or 8 years old and didn't realize that the scores of Oz books were not written by Baum himself. That being said, I had a discerning eye (don't all children?) and could tell they were not all of the same quality. Of course, of course, this one is the best and mostest wonderful.

L. Frank Baum's Oz books are just another handful in the long list of classic children's books that I have never read. While I liked the differences between the novel and the classic film version, for me it was just ok. I felt like the story was awfully slight (did Baum want to save up for the other 13 books in the series?), and I don't feel compelled to read other books in the series. Read this one with Ian again because we were taking him to see the movie for the first time (and on the big screen too). He enjoyed the book and "got" more of it this time. And he absolutely loved the movie. He's been humming and singing "We're off to see the Wizard..." at random times since last Thursday. It's a big difference from my 56 year old aunt who is still suffering the scars of trauma inflicted by the flying monkeys year after year after year throughout her childhood.
