Eleanor Oliphant is not completely fine at all. At first I thought that the book was going to follow a well-worn groove about an odd person and her odd habits, but then began to wonder about her alcohol intake, which seemed a bit excessive though she treats it as completely normal. As the story progresses and the layers are peeled away, the looming shadow of Mummy hovers over everything. The book becomes a rather sweet story about being human and finding a place in the world.

This book was an easy, mostly fun read. It got a little old halfway through, though. It kind of went on and on showing us Eleanor's quirky personality without doing much to further the plot. My biggest complaint about it is that I found it annoying that the author was purposefully withholding information from me clearly with the intent to surprise me with it later. Yet another book in the light-hearted attempt to depict characters with PTSD, autism, mental illness, or some other "misfit" category. It's a little too dark to be "chick lit" but it does have its humorous moments. I was quite captivated by Eleanor by the middle of the book and happy to cheer her on.
