This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I alternated between reading and listening to this. I can see why it gets so much attention—especially for the audiobook. It's great! BUT, why only 3 stars? Maybe 3 1/2?

Basically the quality of the writing and production is all great, but first of all—similar to the movie Almost Famous—it's not my favorite subject matter. Why did I bother reading it? I read it as part of a challenge and I was confident it wouldn't be a waste of my time. However, The Dutch House is not my favorite subject matter, I alternated between reading and listening to this. I can see why it gets so much attention—especially for the audiobook. It's great! BUT, why only 3 stars? Maybe 3 1/2?

I think besides the subject matter, incl. So much profanity & drugs (but I knew they would be there obv).. there were elements that kept it from feeling totally realistic—where I saw the hand of the author. I haven't witnessed the 70s rock'n'roll lifestyles of LA, but from my limited observations of addiction, recovery is rarely so linear, it's rarely just one stint at rehab, the relationships cannot save you, however much they want to—it's a very personal journey. Warren was by far my favorite character. I was always happy to read / hear his commentary. Eddie felt like the most real character, though of course he's the least likeable. I felt like I was supposed to like Carmela. Like she was the 1970s answer for Eliza Hamilton, but for some reason she felt like the most romanticized character of all. She just felt like a caricature(view spoiler)

Anyway, minor complaints, I suppose, but it kept it from 4 stars for me. ...more

Best audiobook I’ve listened to in a long time! The full cast brought something to this book that I don’t think I would have gotten from reading it print. I highly recommend listening if you can.
