Briony Tallis gadis 13 tahun, remaja tapi belum sepenuhnya meninggalkan sifat kanak-kanak, bercita-cita menjadi novelis dengan ilusi kisah dongeng putri raja menikahi pangeran tampan, happy ending. Novelis cilik ini mempunyai pikiran konservatif tradisionalis, keteraturan, kerapihan, tertib. Briony Tallis gadis 13 tahun, remaja tapi belum sepenuhnya meninggalkan sifat kanak-kanak, bercita-cita menjadi novelis dengan ilusi kisah dongeng putri raja menikahi pangeran tampan, happy ending. Novelis cilik ini mempunyai pikiran konservatif tradisionalis, keteraturan, kerapihan, tertib. Berbeda dengan karakter Cecilia Tallis yang berpikiran bebas, urakan, tidak tertib, bosan dengan keteraturan yang kaku.

Periode pertama tahun 1935, cerita tentang liburan musim panas di rumah Tallis yang besar di wilayah pedesaan Inggris. Briony kecil menentukan nasib hubungan kasih antara Cecilia dengan Robbie Turner, anak pembantu yang bekerja di rumah keluarga Tallis, diberi tempat tinggal di lingkungan rumah Tallis dan dibiayai sekolah . Ian McEwan terkesan ragu dengan fiksi yang ditulisnya, seolah Briony sendiri yang menjadi pengarang. "They chose to believe the evidence of a silly, hysterical little girl".
Meski dibalut dalam literasi bahasa yang indah, alur begitu lambat, terlalu banyak tambahan cerita dalam plot utama, sehingga menjadi kurang dramatis, kehilangan unsur sensasi atau kejutan.
Konflik terlalu disederhanakan, logika terlalu dibuat gampang.

Periode kedua saat perang dunia meletus, kekasih terpisah menjalani hukuman, kemudian ikut tugas bela negara . Dan pujaan hati menjadi perawat melayani yang sakit dan luka. Jarak tidak membuat hati terpisah, saling bercerita melalui pos, berjanji untuk bertemu kembali.
Ian McEwan bertanya , "..how to begin to understand this child's mind".
bagaimana bisa satu orang menyebabkan dunia berperang. Benci irihati seorang gadis cilik bisa membuat keluarga Tallis terpecah, dan Robbie menjadi tentara Inggris yang kalah kuat melawan Jerman, mundur ke Dunkirk, menyebrangi Selat Inggris, mengumpulkan kekuatan kembali untuk memenangkan pertempuran.
"Before prison, before war, before the sight of corpse become banality".

Periode ketiga, Briony telah dewasa belajar seperti kakaknya , menjadi Nurse Tallis di satu rumah sakit kota London. Ia memendam penyesalan yang dalam , menyaksikan bagaimana ngerinya tubuh luka akibat perang, menyadari bagaimana pedihnya hati terluka.

For being so well written, I’m not sure this is a book one enjoys per se.

The characterization was exceptional. When the adolescent girl’s point of view was presented, it sounded like a 12 year old. When the infirm mother took stage, you understood the devastation of migraines. McEwan does not take shortcuts by presenting caricatures. Likewise, the environment is deftly painted — the indolent atmosphere of the family estate, the horrors of combat and the medical wards. Really beautifully written ...more
