A strange book. In a way, a more condensed version of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel. The characters are similar- the amoral scholar who rediscovers magic, the ingenue who becomes trapped in an ancient magical realm. It is beautifully written and an experience in its own right. I enjoyed it thoroughly as a mystery and just as a walk through a unique imagined world. Wouldn’t blame anyone for not enjoying it but I was in the right mood for it.
