I loved this book. I love gothic literature and this was a fantastic modern gothic. It reminded me of the old gothic paperbacks I bought at used bookstores when I was younger.
(I've been drawn to idea of the gothic, that beauty in darkness since I was a small child, that and fantasy) But yes the used bookstore would have a bunch from the 60/70s for like .25 cents or so and I would by bag full (I wish I still had them) And Mexican Gothic has captured that same feeling.

This book is wonderful because the story feels centuries old and modern simultaneously. It takes the classic European gothic tale of an old haunted mansion, mysterious figures, and uncovering secrets and adds new elements. At times it reminds me of Dracula. But it develops into something different. Race isn't pervasive in the book, but it is there. 2 big well-to-do families, one English, one Mexican are the focal points here. This sort of story isn't usually my cup of tea, and it wasn't this time either. I found this to be quite slow. It's 1951 and main character, Noemí, is sent by her father from Mexico City to check on her cousin, Carolina, who was recently married and whisked off to live in her husband's mansion in rural Mexico.
