This was really well written but I think it was just not for me. Reminded me a little of that movie Mother, which disturbed me terribly. Well written
This book is wonderful because the story feels centuries old and modern simultaneously. It takes the classic European gothic tale of an old haunted mansion, mysterious figures, and uncovering secrets and adds new elements. At times it reminds me of Dracula. But it develops into something different. Race isn't pervasive in the book, but it is there. 2 big well-to-do families, one English, one Mexican are the focal points here. It was slow for me. I think that this book would make a great suspense movie. For me, this would be a case where the movie is better than the book.
I wanted to like this way more than I did. Lush writing though.
