East of Eden is basically a re-telling of the biblical story of Cain and Abel - the two sons of Adam and Eve. Set in Salinas Valley, California, East of Eden tells the story of two generations of brothers, Adam and Charles Trask, and then Adam's sons, twins Aron and Caleb. Intertwined with the Trask family is the Hamilton family, immigrants from Ireland, who reside on a barren plot of land in the Salinas Valley (the Hamilton’s were based on Steinbeck’s own family tree).
