What Members Thought
Since I was familiar with the story, I put off reading this one as long as I could. While Steinbeck writes books about great themes, his pen is the place joy goes to die. Sure, he accurately depicts a sad time in America's history but we do feel for his characters and I sometimes wish there'd be a happy ending for some of them.

This was a read aloud with my teenagers. Despite the depressing content, I love all of Steinbeck’s writing—he sets a scene so well. I hated the ending, but this led to a good discussion about marginalization and loyalty.
No question about it. Brilliant. One of the best books ever written.
But I cried almost through it all. It is very hard.
