It’s very rare that I listen to audiobooks other than when I’m driving. But even though almost none of the characters are likeable and I’m still not sure whether I’d say I enjoyed the book or not. I was pretty sucked in to it. So much so that it spilled out of the car into everywhere. I listened while cleaning, and while sewing, and grocery shopping. Really loved the book, one of my favorite books of 2018. I laughed a lot and I cried a lot. What more could you want from a book. Loved how flawed Evelyn was.

It is hard to believe that Evelyn Hugo isn't real when you read this. The complex character is slowly built up as she tells her life story to her personally chosen biographer, interspersed with some details about Monique, who has been chosen for reasons that are not made clear until the end of the book. Actually a lot better than I thought it'd be. Everything scar the last chapter was captivating and even emotional. Don't let the tone of narration in the first and last chapters steer you off track, once the story changes it's less clinical and detached and more immersive and emotional ...more
