What Members Thought
As my high school honors lit teacher would say, "This book blew the top of my head off!" This was truly a remarkable book and I'm ashamed it took me so long to read it. You have to give her credit for creativity. And I appreciate how the erratically lucid storytelling tries to express what slavery might do to a person's clarity of thought. But this book is not for the faint of heart, managing to bring up both bestiality and infanticide in the first chapter, and the magical-thinking, surreal aspects of the story didn't resonate with me. I think it's important to read about hard subjects, but also I think I prefer my depressing topics in a non-fiction format.

Such an incredibly thought-provoking book. Reading it and discussing it were sometimes difficult, but difficult in the right way. It challenges preconceived thought about many things, even beyond the issue of slavery, racism, etc. Perhaps the most difficult part though, is the way it unflinchingly confronts readers with the horrors of the past. This is definitely for an older audience and would be great for in-depth discussions.
