4.5 stars. I really liked this a lot. Loved the concept of the daemons!
I'm also a big fan of not dumbing down books for kids, I feel like this has changed so much over the last decades. I thought this would be a much more fluffy book and was pleasently surprised. Loved the themes in this as well. And I want that alethiometer, please!
I've read this half on my kindle, half as audiobook. The audiobook is read by a full cast and really great. The only thing that was a bit annoying at times was Lyra ...more

I really didn't like this book. It felt contrived, and the mystical/magical stuff was vague and unconvincing. Plus, *spoiler alert* her parents are the bad guys who are torturing and killing little kids, which just seems wrong for a children's novel. Ew.
