What Members Thought

3-1/2 Stars.
Oh, this book… The writing is great. The story is good. It was amazing how The Count kept up on the historical and political changes in the world while being exiled to one single building.
I’m not even sure if I can pinpoint why I didn’t love this book. It went on too long for me. Many readers seemed taken with the characters ‘adopted’ by The Count as daughter and granddaughter figures, but I wasn’t so much.
I will read another of Towles’s books.

It was a bit slow-paced for me in the middle but gradually gained its momentum halfway to the end. I personally enjoyed its Casablanca (if you’re into noir films I suggest you watch it ☺️) references. Not as poignant as The Book Thief and Atonement (two of my favourite historical fiction novels) but it is just so heartwarming you can’t help but root for the Count. It’s been a while since I’ve read books that made me feel things.
