What Members Thought

Beautifully written and so much more interesting than his last novel (imho). Great characters that had some complex emotional responses. Loved the Casablanca references.

I loved this book. I think more than half of a lifetime within the 4 walls of a home prison might be boring but there was plenty of adventure. The main character totally charmed me. I also feel I learned a bit about politics, history, and art and music appreciation. I also was reminded of perspective when history is summarized and told retroactively vs as it unfolds in real time.

I shouldn’t have liked this book. It is very much a long apologia for class hierarchy, even if it’s disguised as something quite the opposite. That said, it’s pretty great. The characters are fun to spend time with, the writing is quick and sharp, and the breadth of the story is encompassing. It didn’t hurt that I really love the Metropol Hotel, which was itself certainly one of the book’s main characters.
