I have very mixed feelings about this book. It is a genre I am drawn to over and over. The plot is as compelling, and shocking as any other story set in the same time period. It was because of the plot, and the characters that I kept going. Ordinarily a book with all that going for it wouldn't have taken me almost a year to finish, I've finished similar books in a day or so in the past. I had trouble with the writing style of this book though. Frequently I would notice a very state the obvious, ...more

Enjoyable casual read, not fine lit and not a masterpiece.
Dumbfounded as to the super high rating - which is what drove me to read this book.

Hannah writes the dramatic, thrilling parts very well (4), but is much less engaging in the more casual, mundane segments of the story (2), which were sometimes difficult to trudge through.

An amazing story of two sisters who survive the horrors of war each in her own way. Both brave and heroic. A beautifully written and incredibly thought provoking book.

I give this book a 2.5 stars. Some things just didn't work for me. There were tons of cliches and that alone I wouldn't have minded so much but it is the incongruities and implausibility of every situation. For example: Isabelle steals a bike from a police officer in the middle of winter with snow covering the ground and there is no mention of the tracks the bike would make, Isabelle distributes anti Nazi papers at the same time every morning and the Nazis know it yet they are unable to catch he ...more

I didn’t start enjoying this book until I got halfway through it. I was ready to give up on it and then Hannah finally grabbed me.
It was an exciting read for me after that and had me crying at the end. I’m glad I didn’t give up on it.

Points for a good story. Points deducted for feeling manipulated as a reader. I've read some amazing books set during WWII; this one does not meet that criteria. It seems more formulaic despite the focus on the extraordinary story of les passers. I recommend, but with mild reservations for this reason. ...more

It takes an awful lot for a book to make me cry, but this one did. It was well written for the most part, however there were some parts that I found unbelievable, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. However, the story was incredible and terribly moving with well rounded characters.
