What Members Thought
Very readable, though written very simply. I became increasingly frustrated with this story as the deaths of main characters would be mentioned only in passing, and breaks between time periods seemed completely arbitrary. About halfway through it lost the plot substantially and there seemed little cohesion or point- just rambling from then on. The narrator reads very haltingly, which is jarring.
I very much loved and very much hated this book. Min Jin Lee beautifully wrote a book about history, family and obligation that was gutting. Her woke spoke me me of the suffering of women. She made me both proud to be a woman and sad to endure being a woman. It was a great read but left me feeling uneasy somewhat.
