This is a complex story, which for me boiled down to families and behaviour. Adolescents searching for their place, babies wanted and unwanted, ordered existences becoming disrupted, and events and decisions from the past surfacing and affecting events in unexpected ways.

Perhaps 3.5 stars, but I rounded down because (for me) 4 stars indicates I would definitely read more by this author. This was read for a book club and is not my usual thing, so chances are good that I probably won't unless there is a sequel. Anyway, 3 stars is still a good book. I found this book frustrating and upsetting. The characters had no consequences for their actions, and I didn't sympathize with any of them--they were all selfish. I kept reading to find out why this book is raved about and to find out about Mia's mysterious past, but that made me dislike her so much. As a break from my typical fantasy, I chose this while on a road trip. I liked the exploration of mother/daughter relationships, the mysterious character of Mia and her effect on the young females around her, also the interesting historical take on Shaker Heights. Good summer read.

This was a borderline two-star rating. I thought the characters were flat and didn't respond with enough emotion to many of the situations.

The portrayal of white-suburban-privileged-upper-middle class life was terrifying and spot-on.
