It took me awhile to get into this book. WWII is not my favorite era. However, parts of the book were exquisitely written and it gave me a lot to think about—the atrocities of war, the scars humans carry around with them, their resilience, their heartbreak.

I couldn't finish this book. It was a great story but I hated the way it was told. For one thing, I have a personal aversion to books written in the present tense. Considering that the action in this book takes place so long ago, the present tense seemed particularly jarring. Plus, the sort of impressionistic writing left me cold.
