Historical fiction about World War 2 is not my thing at all, I think in large part because it feels like fiction could never do such a thing justice, but this is one of those rare instances where a book is so beautifully written that I'm just like dang.
Though to be honest without the beautiful writing I don't know that the story/plot would actually carry it. Anthony Doerr knows how to put words into sentences. 10/10 ability to use English good. In anyone else's hands this book would probably be ...more

Somewhere between a 3-4 for me. The writing, when viewed as sentences or paragraphs, or even chapters, was beautiful. At times I struggled with the jumping timeline. I don't know how much it did to help the story flow and I sometimes had to flip back to chapter headings for a reminder of the date.

Excellent writing. Great story. Sometimes I had a little trouble following , since it jumped back and forth in time. Now that I'm not under pressure to get it finished. I will go back and read some parts over again. Just to read the lyrical rhythm of the words. I would give it 4 1/2 stars.
