I'll probably revise this later but for now, I will just say that the back cover of my edition of this book calls it "The Strangest Love Story Ever Told" and I have to concur. It is weird, creepy and frankly, not really a love story. It is more of a ghost story, or a tale of revenge and how it can destroy a person's soul. Be prepared to find every single character unlikeable and/ or sad and pathetic. In the early 19th-century words such as alcoholism, child abuse, co-dependence or post traumatic ...more

This started off good for me, and I thought I was going to really like it. But it just went more and more downhill as it went along. I hated every character, and didn't find it an enjoyable book to read. My copy of the book said "love never dies" on the front cover, which I found laughable, because I hardly felt affection from anyone towards anyone else, let alone love. I don't understand why this has been shelved so many times as a romance.

And I really hated every time Joseph spoke in the book.

It took me a while to get into this book after not having read it for years and years. I really liked it--Heathcliff totally creeps me out and the original Catherin is ridiculous, but I love the Catherine/Hareton ending.

Updated review 10/19: This book always sucks me in: I only liked Nelly Dean this time and liked how she is really the only one that Heathcliff has a soft spot for. Heathcliff is always much more brutal in the book than I remember. Catherine is the worst, as usual, and Linton is a

Something about this story just sucks you right in! I've always supposed I must have read it, or like my prejudice against Jane Austen (before I actually read anything by her) I supposed it was a dreary romance and I wouldn't like it. Well, I loved it. Melodramatic? Yes. Over the top? Yes. But so evocative of the Yorkshire landscape, and of the time in which this is set. I wouldn't call it a romance at all. At least the way we use that term today, it implies a happily ever after ending. Nope, no ...more

I don’t understand why I’d like to reread this book. Nothing particularly exciting happens. It’s about relationships between some very sick individuals and families. It’s about revenge. The writing is great. Enough detail and dialogue make it interesting and engaging.
