What Members Thought

I'll probably revise this later but for now, I will just say that the back cover of my edition of this book calls it "The Strangest Love Story Ever Told" and I have to concur. It is weird, creepy and frankly, not really a love story. It is more of a ghost story, or a tale of revenge and how it can destroy a person's soul. Be prepared to find every single character unlikeable and/ or sad and pathetic. In the early 19th-century words such as alcoholism, child abuse, co-dependence or post traumatic

This started off good for me, and I thought I was going to really like it. But it just went more and more downhill as it went along. I hated every character, and didn't find it an enjoyable book to read. My copy of the book said "love never dies" on the front cover, which I found laughable, because I hardly felt affection from anyone towards anyone else, let alone love. Something about this story just sucks you right in! I've always supposed I must have read it, or like my prejudice against Jane Austen (before I actually read anything by her) I supposed it was a dreary romance and I wouldn't like it. Well, I loved it. Melodramatic? Yes. Over the top? Yes. But so evocative of the Yorkshire landscape, and of the time in which this is set. I wouldn't call it a romance at all. At least the way we use that term today, it implies a happily ever after ending. Nope, no
