It took me a while to get into this book after not having read it for years and years. I really liked it--Heathcliff totally creeps me out and the original Catherin is ridiculous, but I love the Catherine/Hareton ending.

Something about this story just sucks you right in! I've always supposed I must have read it, or like my prejudice against Jane Austen (before I actually read anything by her) I supposed it was a dreary romance and I wouldn't like it. Well, I loved it. Melodramatic? Yes. Over the top? Yes. But so evocative of the Yorkshire landscape, and of the time in which this is set. I wouldn't call it a romance at all. At least the way we use that term today, it implies a happily ever after ending. Nope, no Something about this story just sucks you right in! At least the way we use that term today, it implies a happily ever after ending. Nope, not here. Macbeth and Moby Dick have nothing on Heathcliff. We have ghosts. We have madness. We have revenge. Lots of wind and snow. People dying right and left. (Well, my Yorkshire relatives left Yorkshire for America about this time, because all the women in the family were dying of tuberculosis.... What must life have been like for them?) Then there is Nelly Dean, a truly unreliable narrator. I will definitely be reading this again.

Ms. Froggatt was marvelous, and of course she knows the Yorkshire dialect. Will have to try some others, and seek out the movie versions...

I have vague memories of Heathcliff being significant in old literature classes, and I knew he wasn't as loved as Darcy but though I couldn't remember the details I assumed he was a loveable bastard. Turns out he was just a bastard, not lovable, and extremely manipulative. Everybody at the beginning of the book is kinda inherently unlikeable.

Hella respect Catherine tho for not hooking up with Heathcliff. Even though she loved him, she knew he was bad news, and stayed strong and didn't get together or marry him. She even tried to warn Isabella, but she thought Catherine was just jealous and ignored the warnings. And when Isabella realized how much of a monster Heathcliff was, did she apologize to Catherine for not listening to her warnings? Nope, she was even more mad at Catherine for being friends with him. *rolls eyes*

Once we started playing musical chairs with the children, I had to sit down and remember which kid had which parents. Cathy should have taken after her mother, but no, she took after Isabella, skipping down the path and not minding warnings until she was trapped and couldn't get out. Instead of sheltering her so much that she was desperate to get together with the only eligible boy she has access to, her father and the nurse should have helped her become more worldly and educated.

I began to seriously detest this book when Linton forces Cathy into marriage. I had such high hopes for Linton, but no, living under Heathcliff's abuse made him spineless and cruel, and I nearly threw the book across the room the morning after when Linton is eating a sweet and whining about how annoying it is that Cathy keeps crying after being 1)forced into marriage and probably raped, and 2) being locked up and kept away from her on-death's-bed father. Fucking asshole.

I guess it's a good thing that Cathy and Hareton found happiness in the end, although they both deserved to find love with someone outside of this whole mess. Not to mention the whole first-cousins thing. ...more

This is not a great love story, it's a domestic violence charge waiting to happen. I'm glad that I read it and it generated lots of talk at my book group, but I was so not enthralled by it. There are other classics and other romances that would be more worth your time. ...more
