I fell in love with Wuthering Heights when I first read it as a thirteen year old girl, and have read it many times through the years. I was so happy to see it as a September Book Club Selection, so I gladly pulled one of the four editions that proudly sit at the top of my bookshelf and re-read it for 2,179 time. To this day, it remains my favorite book of all time. In my opinion, the greatest novel ever written. ❤

Wuthering Heights is narrated in flashback by Nelly Dean, a housekeeper from Thrushcross Grange (the house where Catherine grows up) as told to Mr. Lockwood, who is a visitor/tenant at Thrushcross Grange.

Wuthering Heights really is all about Heathcliff, and what a mighty character he is - A poor gypsy boy, with no parents or family, who was adopted and raised with the Earnshaw family in Yorkshire. Heathcliff is treated badly by Mr. Earnshaw’s son, Hindley. His hatred for Heathcliff grows over the years, and Mr Earnshaw sends Hindley away to school. Mr. Earnshaw's daughter Catherine is fascinated by Heathcliff, and as the years go by, Heathcliff and Catherine fall deeply in love. But in a dark, gothic book like Wuthering Heights that love can never be. Heathcliff wants to marry Catherine, but he is below her in social status. And even though Catherine loves Heathcliff, she doesn’t want to marry down. So instead of following her heart, she chooses status over love and marries the wealthy Edgar Linton. And thus starts the action of Wuthering Heights, as Heathcliff spends the rest of his life seeking revenge with everyone who has wronged him.

The setting, amongst the wild, stormy, dark and bleak Yorkshire moors, in nineteenth-century England was perfect for the plot and perfectly sets the mood of the story.

There are no likeable characters in Wuthering Heights. I hated every single one of them, especially Catherine and Heathcliff, who have no redeeming qualities. Catherine is spoiled, selfish, and childish. Heathcliff is heartless, bitter, cold, angry, vindictive, resentful, and he does such unforgiveable things. Yet I couldn’t help but pity them and long for their happiness. And this to me is the beauty of Emily Brontë’s writing – that she is able to evoke such sympathy/empathy from the reader for these unlikeable characters.

Beautifully written in an old-fashioned literary style. It’s the perfect classic gothic love story. Not a pretty love story, but Emily Brontë’s perspective on love.

I love it, love it, love it. ❤

I'm not sure what to think of this book yet. I had to read it for class, and we just took a test on the last 2 chapters. I liked it, but it annoyed me. And I honestly do not know how it can be classified as a love story. Catherine and Heathcliff treated each other like complete crap. If anything makes it a love story, it's Catherine (the second-haha) and Hareton. I did really enjoy it though. Out of all the books I've had to read for school, I think this is my favorite. I read this book as a young teen and thought that these were the stupidest characters I had ever encountered. I thought I should give the book another chance. Nope still stupid and also extremely unlikeable. I'm just glad I opted for the audio version. The audio actually made the strange third person narration bearable. ...more
