omg, are you a big fan of foreshadowing? Do you like to be reminded of everything that's going to happen over and over again until it finally does? Then this book is right up your alley.
I feel like it took a lot away from the story. You rarely got to wonder what was going to happen next, and you don't get to be surprised by much.
I am thoroughly confused by the thing with colors, and a lot of the descriptions treat words like they're meaningless.

The Holocaust is not a topic to be addressed casually. So when I realized that Death was the narrator I prepared for a difficult read. Not so. At times intensely sad or surprisingly comic I enjoyed following young Liesel through it all. Have a tissue handy. You'll need it.
