A Boston mother struggles with raising four daughters while her husband is away during the Civil War. Sure it's a classic but it's still a great read today.
It presents a wonderful, slightly idealized (wholesome, moral) portrait of life at the time. And folks would probably think of the family as a moderately prosperous New England family rather than as a truly poverty stricken as they seem to think they are.
