A lot of the buzz about this book mentions all the pop culture references from the 1980's, and that is certainly part of its appeal. However, I think the escapist value of the story transcends those aspects -- you don't have to be a former Dungeons & Dragons player who spent every quarter you ever had on arcade games to like this book. Some books are moving. Some make you really think. And then others are just plain fun. 5 stars for the fun factor! If you remember the 80's and are familiar with the whole video game/online culture, this is going to be a fun read. One of the more amusing books I've read in a while. I liked it! ...more

This book was fast-paced and fun! It may have been wrapped up just a little too quickly at the end, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I listened to the audiobook and liked the narrator's sound effects for pacman and Max's stuttering voice. If not for these sound effects, I would have rated the book 3 stars because most of it was too predictable and calculated and full of geeky 1980's references.
The story line was unique to me and the world-building was different. I enjoyed the attention to detail (Ultraman's fighting stances) but they sometimes made things too obvious (the books falling over in the chat room).
