Pretty damn neat book. Reminds me of a modern "The Westing Game" - in good ways. ...more

Really more of a 3.5 for me. I enjoyed it very much and thought it was well constructed and well enough written, but found the ubiquity of the 80s pop culture references to be overbearing. And since that's part of the whole premise of the book... What are you gonna do. Worth reading for the celebration of geekdom alone, though. ...more

Enjoyed this story much more than I expected. Found myself wanting to read it instead of handling my daily stuff. The characters and plot were fabulous and entertaining.

LOVED this book. And I'm a little sad I didn't listen to the Wil Wheaton read version. I didn't so much read it as gulp it down, so maybe I can listen to it in the future.

The writing is OK, neither great nor poor, but the story is compelling and satisfying. It makes you want to be a gamer though, so if you don't have that addiction it might be better to avoid the book.

It was an enjoyable read with all the 80s name dropping and the universe building (universe within a universe) - pretty great stuff. I listened to the audiobook and it was amusing to hear the references to the reader and other authors. If you enjoy Cory Doctorow, this book may be up your alley too.

Great read...lots of 80s pop culture references. I highly recommend listening to the audio version.

I listened to the audiobook and liked the narrator's sound effects for pacman and Max's stuttering voice. If not for these sound effects, I would have rated the book 3 stars because most of it was too predictable and calculated and full of geeky 1980's references.
The story line was unique to me and the world-building was different. I enjoyed the attention to detail (Ultraman's fighting stances) but they sometimes made things too obvious (the books falling over in the chat room).
