I honestly didn't enjoy this too much. Reading others reviews about halfway through, I especially focused on negative because I couldn't quite place where this was going wrong for me. Scene setting is wondorous and the premise of things is perfect. Its just that the execution was lacking.
Characters - Jacob, was aside from being our main character and 'hero' he was sorta, bland, he can see the monsters, yep okay cool. Can I give this two and a half stars? I feel like i'm betraying the hype here.

Characters - Jacob, was aside from being our main character and 'hero' he was sorta, bland, he can see the monsters, yep okay cool. not really something to shout from the rooftops, he was srta aloof and a lone figure for effect. But for the fact you had little chance to identify and bond with him emotionally it was sorta like okay, you got no friends token rich kid misunderstood by your parents. peregrine was cold and hard to identify with. Emma, aside from the cool fire power which wasn't exploited nearly enough as she should have been with this phenomenal talent was another personality wise sorta bland figure, I think I must have skirted over the description of her because my mental image was a relatively standard blonde haired blue eyed girl with a bob. - the feelings for his grandfather may be later explained, but I don't have the next two books and i'm not interested in pursuing the series so unlikely i'll ever find out.
Enoch & Millard was characters i'd have liked to have/know more about rather than the sort of tertiary figures they were in this story. Bronwyn, strong yep so what... not sure she'd even qualify to live in the peculiar house when you contrast being strong to reanimating the dead, come on.

I honestly preferred what I remember of the movie to the story and this isn't even a 'well I saw the movie first so...' sort of thing.

Other people have picked up that the pictures seem very disjointed and the story is trying so hard to fit with the images and after reading someone else note that, that was a big issue that I realised i'd been having, it was almost if the story wasn't steering itself but was being pulled along like a fish on a line from image to image. On purchasing the book, I was excited to see how the images tied in and gave a break to the book. I found chapters sorta long, so the images were a welcome break now and again.

I've felt like most of this has been dragging and only the last 50 pages and a little of the beginning due to the creepy atmosphere going on, seemt to pass pretty quickly otherwise I was slipping my bookmark back in to calculate how many pages left.
