Let me sum up this entire book and review with one word: confusion.

I didn’t understand this book, at all. Zero understanding. I have no idea what happened or how I’m supposed to feel about it now. This was a book that I expected to enjoy much more than I actually did in the end, I was pretty disappointed.

A lot of bloggers have mixed opinions about Wink Poppy Midnight, and initially, I was one of them. When the book was published at the end of March, I picked up a copy and read about 25% before I set it aside for other books I’d committed to read. It’s one of those books where you have no idea what’s happening until the end, which makes it hard to get into, but once you give it a shot, it’s a good read.

When the book was published at the end of March, I picked up a copy and read about 25% before I set it aside for other books I’d committed to read. It’s one of those books where you have no idea what’s happening until the end, which makes it hard to get into, but once you give it a shot, it’s a good read.

After reading the synopsis, you have no clue what this book is about, and you will feel the same way while reading it until you’re about 85% into the book. It might’ve even been farther in when I figured out what was happening. One thing I really liked by the time I finished reading is the overall development of the characters and how knowing each other impacted them in various ways.

This is a hard book to review without giving any spoilers, so I’m going to keep this brief.

At the beginning of the story, Midnight explains his relationship with Poppy and how he was in love with her at one time. They’re friends with benefits, except Poppy was never really his friend and not even someone I’d want to hang out with if I was Midnight.

This book doesn’t have chapters. Instead, it’s broken up into alternating first person POVs—Wink, Poppy, and Midnight. This was a bit jarring at first and had a lot to do with why I didn’t finish the book until two days ago. Most of the narrative is from Midnight’s POV, with very short one to two page scenes told from Wink’s perspective.

The scenes narrated by Poppy annoyed me most of the time because Poppy is the stereotypical mean girl. The entire time I read this book I was thinking about Rachel McAdams in the movie Mean Girls. I commend the author for taking such an evil brat and transforming her into a likeable character by the end of the story. Poppy is what you would consider the villain in the story, and in some respects she is, but the ending is what surprised me most.

Midnight isn’t any ray of sunshine or Mr. Personality. His narrative takes up a lot of the book, and he’s not very interesting. He’s about as exciting as one of the boys from a John Green book. I don’t recall any mention of the characters having hobbies, interesting qualities, or really anything that didn’t make them seem like cardboard cutouts. I kept reading because I wanted to know how Poppy’s behavior would affect Wink and Midnight.

Wink is shy, but she had no problem standing up to a bully like Poppy. I liked Wink a lot. Her family lives on a farm across the street from Midnight with a bazillion kids and a mother who reads leaves and Tarot cards and believes in the supernatural. For most of the story, I thought this would somehow factor into the equation.

Some people have labeled this book as supernatural, which I’m assuming has to do with the Tarot cards, but it’s in every way a contemporary YA. There’s some romantic aspect to the story but not enough that I would classify it as a contemporary romance.

Wink Poppy Midnight isn’t going to leave you wanting more or thinking about it weeks after reading, but it was an overall enjoyable read with a satisfying ending. I’ve read the first two books published by April Genevieve Tucholke, and while I don’t like her stylistic choice to repeat words and phrases, I do like her stories.

I couldn't really get into this book. I don't know if it was because it was the end of the month or I couldn't connect to the characters. I did like the writing style though and the character names were unique.
