Sometimes a wrapping can be deceiving, either for the good or bad. Other times it matches perfectly with the story we are about to step inside. Becky Wade’s novels fall into this ideal with class, grace and romcom bliss. Becky reemerged in the fiction game some five or six years back with the debut My Stubborn Heart, a story about a broken hockey player and the woman who helps him change. Then came the Porter’s, a family comprised of three elder brothers and their young, wild child of a sister D Sometimes a wrapping can be deceiving, either for the good or bad. Other times it matches perfectly with the story we are about to step inside. Becky Wade’s novels fall into this ideal with class, grace and romcom bliss. Becky reemerged in the fiction game some five or six years back with the debut My Stubborn Heart, a story about a broken hockey player and the woman who helps him change. Then came the Porter’s, a family comprised of three elder brothers and their young, wild child of a sister Dru. Finally, we are honored to return to small-town Holley, Texas and meet the woman Dru grew up to be.

Following a wild child series of mistakes, Dru Porter is finally “home.” In more ways than one. After letting her brothers pick her up after those mistakes, she joined for a tour with the Marines, and is now back in Holley where she works as a protection agent. Her latest client is Gray Fowler. An NFL superstar, Gray is dealing with a crazed stalker, but keeping his relationship with the beautiful and fierce Dru isn’t easy. As the two of them work together to root out the identity of the stalker, the stalker escalates. It’ll take Dru breaking the rule she promised herself she never would, and Gray breaking out of his protective outer shell to unmask this threat… and maybe to open their hearts to new possibilities.

As is the norm with a Becky Wade novel, the signature style she gives each of her stories is
displayed in beautiful form. Her One and Only sparkles with witty charm and emotionally charged acts of forgiveness, love and healing. Because Dru wasn’t front and center in comparison to her three older brothers, she was one of the most interesting characters. We only saw glimpses of her in the earlier books of the series and it made her story one most keenly anticipated. Reading about her journey (even in the aftermath rather than the present) is a rewarding experience like none other, especially considering it’s this that closes out the beautiful series that has been this family saga.

As usual, the story has a healthy dose of spark-infused banter between its protagonists. Dru is the rule keeper in this scenario while Gray is the devil-may-care football star who isn’t used to someone telling him “no.” Their opposing personalities and vision of the “rules” in their relationship makes for a fun read and experience. Some of the quips cause spontaneous laughter while some remind us of the power real, lasting love (based on more than chemistry) has. Gray is one of those men in need of shifting his lifestyle to better benefit not someone he’s come to love, but himself (as well as for the sake of another) because he's otherwise unable to live life fully. Dru is a redeemed, beautiful soul wise to the world, but not jaded by it because she blames no one (outside herself) or nothing for the choices that led her to this place.

These books are written to be standalones if need be, but if you’ve not read a novel by Becky Wade, I’d recommend starting at the beginning with Undeniably Yours. It’s well worth it, plus will make the story arc (in this) between Meg and Bo all the more meaningful. The tease of a suspenseful mystery is also masterfully written.

Fans of authors like Melissa Tagg or Susan May Warren simply must read the novels Becky Wade pens. They’re insightful, humorous and unafraid to tackle some of life’s messier challenges. Her One and Only is no different. The only drawback is having to await to discover what Becky will next enchant readers with.

This book was filled with page-turning romance, a touch of suspense, and offered satisfying closure for a beloved fictional family! I love the interesting way Becky Wade spun the dynamic between Dru and Gray and the unique voice this story had in the scope of one of my favorite series.

I’ve found Becky Wade’s Porter Family series to be a bit hit-and-miss. I love the characters, I love the writing, and I love the plots. What I don’t love is too much attention paid to the subplot and back story at the expense of the main story.

Her One and Only was a classic example: it’s been nine years since Undeniably Yours, the first novel in the series, and the first quarter of Her One and Only spent too much time on the back story and too little time getting to the central plot. With all r I’ve found Becky Wade’s Porter Family series to be a bit hit-and-miss. I love the characters, I love the writing, and I love the plots. What I don’t love is too much attention paid to the subplot and back story at the expense of the main story.

Her One and Only was a classic example: it’s been nine years since Undeniably Yours, the first novel in the series, and the first quarter of Her One and Only spent too much time on the back story and too little time getting to the central plot. With all respect to Meg, this wasn’t her story. It was Dru’s.

And Dru’s story was excellent. The plot was more romantic suspense than straight romance, which I liked. She’s twenty-six, an ex-Marine who now works in “executive protection” (i.e. private security). She’s one of the team designated to protect Mustangs football legend Gray Fowler, who has been receiving threats.

Gray isn’t worried by the threats even if his management is, and he certainly doesn’t see how Dru is supposed to protect him. Gray also has trust issues—I’m still not sure if he doesn’t want protection because he doesn’t believe there are threats, or because his upbringing means he doesn’t trust anyone to protect him. After all, if his mother didn’t protect him, why would someone who barely knows him?

So once we got into Dru and Gray’s story, Her One and Only was excellent. Gray has Dru pretend to be his girlfriend as her cover story for hanging around all the time, and while she initially finds the pretence difficult, it gets easier. Too much easier . . .

Her One and Only had an exciting plot, excellent characters and some great writing (although lines like “she was as warm as January” possibly don’t mean the same to everyone. January Down Under is hot. Blistering hot). And the Christian content was excellent: Dru has recently recommitted herself to her faith while Gray believes he’s fine with God, despite a lifestyle which says the opposite—an issue I think gets too little attention in Christian fiction.

Overall, I think this was my favourite novel of the series (although A Love Like Ours had the better cover, and is a finalist for the RITA Awards). Recommended for contemporary romance and romantic suspense fans.

Her One and Only is part of The Porter Family series and follows the youngest Porter, Dru. This was my first introduction into Ms. Wade's writing and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. This was probably one of the first romantic suspense novels that I've read where both plot lines were balanced equally and realistically. I have adored each and every novel in the Porter Family series. Reading Her One and Only was a bittersweet experience because I simply didn't want it to be over. However, Dru's story was long awaited for me, as she'd made small appearances in previous novels. The element of suspense woven throughout this plot, coupled with Dru's fierce determination not to fall in love with the man she's supposed to be protecting, made for a fun and satisfying read. I'm eager to see what's next from this talente ...more

I’ve read several of Becky Wade’s books and loved them all. This is one of my favorites. The author is masterful at creating realistic and endearing characters. Dru and Gray are so engaging with their witty dialogue and amusing relationship. I fully enjoyed the humor laced through the story. Although this is part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone book. I loved the glimpses of characters from previous books in the series.
